Cahn you Poisson some Photos

I really really stretched for a title that matched the theme there, didn’t I? Like, lord, even I’m cringing! In any case, you can tell- this post is about a few things. The first is the Cahn-Hilliard model of phase separation, which I recently coded up- it’s quite cool! Never thought it’d be so simply. The second is a generic Poisson solver (through relaxation methods) which I’ve also done. We used it to simulate point charge fields and also z-oriented wires and their magnetic potentials/fields. Pretty swish, eh? Ora!

Left (Cahn-Hilliard spinodal decomposition) Right Top (Electric charges) Right Bottom (Magnetic Scalar Potential)

As usual, all the code is up on my GitHub. The checkpoint report (as a PDF, naturally) is also up- to any future students who wish to copy someone elses work and get done-in for plagiarism. I actually learned something magical that is otherwise common sense- if you force the boundary of a potential that is meant to be null at infinity, to be null at some finite radius instead, you end up with a very bad numerical result- you really have to deal with very large grids to get decent simulations for point charges/wires!!!

Anyway, enough about that. Exams are coming and I have no time now- sadly. Pushing all my focus to my MSc project ended up backfiring and now I’m stuck picking up the bill for my past lazyness- and these exams are nipping at my heels like a pre-societal vagabond. I do however, have a fantastic photograph to show…

Corrour Station at night, with Leum Uilleim looming behind.

I’m happy to admit that I am quite proud of this one. You’ve got the stars, some clouds closing in the edges- I added a bit of vignette, too, to further compound that. The station draws you in, and you can still see the faint reflection of light from the tree and left-most bank, with the grass lit up like fire. All with that magnificent mountain behind it! Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better photograph!

Loch Ossian Youth Hostel

I stayed at the SYH on Loch Ossian during my visit there. Honestly a fantastic/magical place- definitely my favourite hostel, for sure. The toilet is nasty, but the sky is great there, the loch is beautiful, and the mountains can’t be beat!

Anyway, take care! 😀
