Слава Україні and The Game of Life

Rather odd coincidence that I’ve finished working with the Game of Life, given that some sadistic kleptomaniacal despot in the Urals is now dictating the fates of a few million fellow slavs. Слава Україні and hopefully that old bastard Putin gets what he has coming to him.

In any case, on the brighter side, here is my rendition of the Game of Life, the quintessential coding project brought up by Conway many decades ago (though back then, done on paper rather than pythonically in a few hours.) Next on the agenda is coding up the SIRS Model, though that’ll be fairly quick, given how close it is to the 2D Ising Model. Anyhow, on to different things!

See the Game of Life in action here, with the R-Pentomino. The code I’ve put up has a few preset patterns to use, and also a plaintext-to-pattern tool included (though nothing to deal with RLE files.)

The agenda recently also brought about the fortuitous opportunity to photograph the local pond with it nice and still once again- the last chance having been a good few months ago. With the exact same framing and composition (but in the dark- the sun had set at this point) I got a fairly decent shot. I also scored a few other shots of the local area- I’ll be off for some sunrise birding tomorrow to cement a fairly photographic couple of days.

Levenhall Links Pond, a good 2/3 hour past sunset (and thus shot in fairly decent darkness.)

In other photographic news, my recent trip to Glen Affric was a 2/3-resounding success (with the other 1/3 being a rather stressful clomp back to Cannich as a storm rolled in, markedly improved by a nice couple from Perth giving me a hitch back to town) I’m now on the prowl for a new spot to go photograph- you can see the photos from this trip in the now-uploaded folder I’ve added to the photograph section of the site.

As always, take care.
