Alea iacta est

Forgive the exotic Latin for the title, but you have to admit, it does have a rather nice ring to it, aye? I may well acquiesce to my own fervent desire to turn this website somewhat professional in the future by introducing Latin titles with all their pompousness therein to all (what little there may be in the future, based on my previous blog here) posts that I rack up on here.

In any case, I digressed a bit there. This is the first post of my site! It’s dawned on me that many academics all seem to have some sort of website- some of them (Anna Lisa Varri’s, for example) are rather swish- you’ll note that I may have stolen the inspiration for this sites domain from her, in fact. Many, however, have some sort of antiquated glob of HTML dredged up from the depths of yesteryear when the net had just been crafted up by an old haggard Brit down in Geneva. In making this one, I hoped to aim for the former case: I do hope it remains in fashion for the times to come, too- or at least the three years I paid up-front for the hosting and domain. Only £140, if I might add. Quite a bargain.

For that bargain (of which you my dear reader will not have paid anything and thus should consume to excess- unless you execrate the cardinal sin of gula) you’ll find various miscellanies that can be attributed to myself. There’s my Photography (of which I earn very little/no income on but hope to get somewhat proficient in the art of image taking with) and then there’s the Physics, which I hope to actually live on some day (though I have my doubts about that at the time of writing.) I’ll gradually saturate this site with other superfluous material related to either or some amalgamation of the above.

With the formalities out of the way, we can look to the unfenced greener pastures beyond all the above: a nice and clean tl;dr…

  • The title means “The die is cast,” effectively that we’re beyond the point of return. My bank balance has reduced by £140, and thus this site will exist for at least three more years. I’d bloody well hope I keep up the physics and photography, so three years is a conservative estimate for this sites lifetime, unless I die by that point (in the literal sense- not in the case of the die that the title implicate… though some folklore actually have gods casting die to decide the fates of the mortals over which they preside: I digress.)
  • This site replaces my old photography blog, which is linked all over the place at this point, and is intended to convolve my academics and hobbies into some esoteric concoction that is (hopefully) not too sour to the eye.
  • This is my professional website, though some areas may be informal, including this very post, given that the site combines informal aspects of my life.

I hope you’ve enjoyed (if you did) reading this post and hopefully will stick around for the (hopefully many) that follow! Here’s a photograph for your time (that isn’t included in the library on-site 😉)

Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto, Japan. I took this before I actually got a significant interest in photography (40 days in Japan, £3,500 of experiences, but only a handful of photos, most of them not that great.) One of the biggest regrets of my life in that I’ve gotten more photos from a daytrip nowadays than I did in a whole month and a third, there. Mark my words I will return there and get my photos, all the way from Cape Soya down to the azure waters of Okinawa.
